ABB has released a new version of ABB Ability™ Predictive Maintenance for grinding which is a unique advanced digital service to maintain, assess and analyze gearless mill drive (GMD) systems.

The upgrade means that ABB Ability™ Predictive Maintenance for grinding is now cloud-based instead of sited on premises and includes a brand-new mobile application that allows real-time notifications on fleet status. The Grinding Connect mobile app, available for iOS and Android, means that mine operators can monitor performance at any time and from any place.

ABB Ability™ Predictive Maintenance for grinding provides easy access to GMD system parameters and allows visualization of performance considering past activity and real-time data and assesses future maintenance requirements. It aims to extend the lifetime of grinding assets through better use of resources and to support non-stop operation and to avoid unforeseen downtime.

The new ABB Ability™ Predictive Maintenance facilitates greater data gathering. The data sample per mine is increased and analytics and trends are more reliably defined. The solution offers a new user experience with fully customizable dashboards, alarms and events all available on the mobile app.

GMDs are the preferred grinding solution at mines characterized by higher-capacity production coupled with low ore grades. By eliminating bolt-on mechanical components such as ring-gears, pinions, couplings and gearboxes, GMDs offer ore producers unrivalled availability, efficiency and durability, while reducing OPEX.

Pioneering technology leader ABB has launched ABB Ability™ Smart Melt Shop, the first smart factory digital application of its kind for the metals industry. It is designed to increase melt shop productivity, save energy and improve employee safety, with payback within six months.

  • ABB Ability Smart Melt Shop digitally connects all steel melt shop processes and moving equipment to synchronize operations and improve production efficiencies, moving steelmakers towards autonomous operations

Based on advanced digital algorithms, the new solution is unique in that it offers not only powerful real-time ladle tracking but also automated crane scheduling and a predictive thermal modelling engine. The tracking engine follows ladle movement via cranes and transfer cars in real time. Radar and laser positioning technologies provide accurate visualization while reducing hardware footprint and maintenance needs compared to radio-frequency identification (RFID) solutions. The automated crane scheduling includes job forecasting, route planning and automatic acknowledgement of jobs.

This will enable steelmakers to move towards autonomous operations by eliminating manual co-ordinations, with increased safety in hot zones due to lower footfall.

The thermal engine function uses ladle thermal history from the tracking engine and forecasted heat movement from scheduling engines to predict the thermal loss during ladle transfer and predicts the correct lift temperature at ladle furnace. This results in better superheat compliance at the caster, eliminating caster slowdowns, hence increasing productivity.

Steelmakers can expect ABB Ability™ Smart Melt Shop to help increase superheat compliance to enable 4-5 percent higher casting speeds to improve productivity and reduce arcing by 5 degrees Celsius per heat in ladle furnaces for increased energy and cost efficiency.

ABB Ability™ Smart Melt Shop has already been installed by JSW Steel Ltd, India’s leading steel company, where it has been integrated into a wider expansion at Dolvi Works plant in Maharashtra state. It is expected to increase the company’s EBITDA profit by around $2million per annum through 4 percent higher casting speeds, time savings of one working day per month and additional output equating to 24,000 tons a year.

ABB has been announced as the main automation and electrification contractor for South American barley malting company Maltería Oriental SA (MOSA) as it extends operations and looks to significantly reduce raw water consumption.

  • ABB secures contract with Uruguay’s first and largest malting company Maltería Oriental SA (MOSA)

From its plant located to the north of Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, MOSA plans to expand its production capacity by using fully automated operations and high technological standards overall. The malt producer and trader supplies to Brazil’s renowned breweries, which can use up the plant’s entire stock when demand is high, but also across the continent and occasionally to Europe.

To support MOSA’s production target of 220,000 tons of barley malt per year, ABB will expand the process control system and update to ABB Ability™ System 800xA version 6.1. This will shorten project execution time, enable greater scalability and enhance flexibility and efficient engineering. ABB’s engineers will also work closely with the customer on communication network improvements and electrical integration of the medium voltage (MV) network.

Aligning with the requirement for automated functionality, ABB will include production data recording and analysis and a centralized control room for several production units. This will help to minimize human intervention on the plant floor. Increased cyber security assurances come from improved network switches with better network management capabilities.

MOSA, which was established more than 85 years ago, was Uruguay’s first malting house and from its strategically important location within striking distance of farms and the port, has become the largest. A process water recycling facility was added to reduce raw water consumption by up to 70 percent.

During a COP26 event, Alfa Laval was announced as the first company to officially join ABB’s newly launched energy efficiency movement, a multi-stakeholder initiative to raise awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency solutions to accelerate the transition towards decarbonization.

Global technology company ABB is working with mining company Boliden and mining and infrastructure equipment manufacturer Epiroc to develop and demonstrate an electric trolley truck system on a test track at Boliden’s Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden.

  • The three companies will jointly develop an electric trolley truck system for underground mining at the Boliden Kristineberg mine in Sweden
  • ABB will provide electrical infrastructure design drawing on the ABB Ability™ eMine integrated portfolio of electrification and digital systems
  • The new system is expected to demonstrate a reduction in CO₂ emissions and an improved work environment

The development project by the three companies will enable heavy transportation with electric driven battery vehicles and is expected to lower CO₂ emissions and improve the work environment at the underground copper-zinc mine.

The system will build on Epiroc’s zero emissions mining haul truck Minetruck MT42 Battery and is highly suitable for long haul ramps. It will feature a trolley pantograph which is to be connected to an overhead contact power line. ABB will provide the electric trolley truck system design, definition of standards and vehicle interface, as well as rectifier substation for the test track. The electrical infrastructure is part of the ABB Ability™ eMine integrated portfolio of electrification and digital systems designed to accelerate the decarbonization of the mining sector.

The announcement follows a call from ABB earlier this year for more collaboration between original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and the key technology suppliers. ABB is working with some of the world’s most innovative mining customers, OEMs and technology innovators and is committed to playing a fundamental role in the transition towards zero emissions in mining operations.

This project is supported by funding from the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova and will contribute to Boliden’s vision to be the most climate friendly and respected metals provider in the world.

Previously, ABB designed, delivered and commissioned an effective electrical infrastructure to power several mine trucks at Boliden AB’s Aitik mine, Sweden's largest open-pit copper mine.

ABB will deliver automation, electrification, quality control systems, motors and drives for Renewcell’s new industrial textile recycling production line in Sundsvall, Sweden. Renewcell is a fast-growing Swedish sustaintech company specializing in textile-to-textile recycling.

With ABB technology, a former SCA paper mill will be transformed into the world’s first commercial-scale recycling plant for cellulosic textiles – created by dissolving natural materials such as cellulose which is then regenerated to create a wide range of fabrics. Renewcell is already working with several fashion manufacturers, and in 2020, the company and H&M Group entered a multi-year partnership to replace virgin fibers with recycled textiles in clothing.

The contract between ABB and Renewcell marks an important milestone for the fashion industry, as it has a major impact on the environment due to the production of raw materials that are made into clothing. According to Renewcell’s preliminary calculations, textile fibers made from its recycled raw material use approximately 50 liters of fresh water per kg in production, compared to around 1,600 liters for cotton and 90 liters for non-cotton cellulosic material viscose. With a maximum production capacity of 60,000 tons per year Renewcell’s innovative approach could help to preserve around 90 billion liters of fresh water, the equivalent of 36,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The process also lowers waste, plastic pollution and both CO₂ and chemical emissions. The use of recycled fabric can help brands deliver on their promises to reduce their negative impact.

Until now, less than one percent of textiles were recycled because the technology to recycle and create new textiles did not exist. This is a significant development for the industry and we’re proud to apply our quality control processes to the sustainable fashion movement.”

The process for clothing recycling is similar to pulp drying, breaking down cellulose in cotton and viscose textiles to recycle into new raw materials. This similarity enables Renewcell to use the existing infrastructure, including buildings and the supply and processing of raw water, waste water, compressed air and electricity at the SCA mill. This will be coupled with ABB’s paper and automation expertise, to manufacture recycled textiles that might otherwise have gone to landfill or incineration.

ABB brings its domain expertise from the pulp and paper industry, for example with specific technology to control the pulp dryer – a piece of equipment that was previously in use to dry raw wood pulp for paper and packaging – and quality control knowledge specific to the process. The customer requested weight and moisture measurement based on testing on a pilot machine.

Among the ABB technology that will be installed in the new plant is the market-leading process control system ABB Ability™ System 800xA that will provide operators with wide visibility and precise control from a central command center to ensure that production is as resource efficient as possible, with less material consumption and reduced waste. In addition, ABB’s PMC800 drive systems will reduce the cost of ownership over the automation lifecycle and improve energy efficiency during production. ABB will also supply ACS880 variable speed drives (VSDs) and IE4 super premium efficient motors, an efficiency level above the IE3 standard mandated by EU Ecodesign regulations. Combining high-efficiency motors with VSDs can typically reduce energy consumption in flow-controlled pulp and paper applications by 30 percent or more.

ABB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MEDATech to jointly explore solutions to decarbonize mining operations through charging solutions and optimized electric drive systems in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for heavy-duty applications. The two companies will share expertise and collaborate in bringing solutions to market that will reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with heavy machinery in mining.

Technology provider ABB and MEDATech bring complementary expertise to designing and building electric heavy mobile equipment. The collaboration could involve exploring further development and possible technologies for high power and automated charging and connector systems to facilitate the adoption of BEVs in industries with heavy machinery.

The collaboration with MEDATech, which largely works across the mining, construction and energy sectors, is the latest in a series that ABB is developing with OEMs and technology innovators to accelerate the transition to all-electric mines.

ABB recently launched ABB Ability™ eMine, a purposeful approach, method and integrated portfolio of electrification and digital systems designed to accelerate the decarbonization of the mining sector. The agreement with MEDATech will complement ABB’s engineering and technology expertise onboard and offboard mining vehicles and allow for much needed and lasting solutions for the industry.

ABB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Stäubli Electrical Connectors to collaborate in bringing solutions to market to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with heavy machinery in mining.

ABB’s service agreement with LKAB covers twelve hoists at Kiruna mine and has been extended until at least the end of 2023

Global technology company ABB has signed a long-term agreement with LKAB to provide service to twelve mine hoists and now of hoisting motors at the Kiruna mine. Kiruna in Northern Sweden is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world, producing more than 85,000 tonnes per day.

ABB has provided LKAB Kiruna with maintenance and hoist cycle optimization to maximize efficiency and increase capacity at the mine since 2010. The new contract extends these services to the end of 2023 with an agreement that LKAB may sign up for a further three years on a rolling basis.

Most of the ore mined at Kiruna is at depths of more than one kilometer, with large solid slabs of iron ore deposits extending several hundreds of meters down into the ground. Local ABB engineers, supported by ABB globally, have worked on site at Kiruna to increase hoist capacity through a reduced hoist cycle time to optimize production. They have improved equipment use, balancing capacity and wear and tear of the hoist equipment.

“LKAB places great emphasis on refining every element of the underground mining process, in order to make it as efficient as possible,” said Peter Ylivainio, Senior Maintenance Engineer at LKAB. “Mining ore at great depths is a logistical challenge that places demands for a well-functioning infrastructure and safe and resource-efficient production, with well-developed production methods and processes vital. We have a long successful relationship with ABB and their local presence, global expertise and remote operations technology support our goals.”

The hoists are the main artery of the production flow at the Kiruna mine as they raise the ore hundreds of meters, from the sublevel to ground level. Their continuous operation is critical for safety and to prevent costly interruptions to production. LKAB’s extended service agreement with ABB is designed to ensure the maximum reliability and availability for the hoist control system, motors and drives located both above and below ground.
