Valmet will deliver solids measurements and Valmet Sludge Dewatering Optimizer to Águas do Tejo Atlântico in Alcantara, Lisbon, Portugal. The optimization, together with reliable solids measurements use, aims at improving the plant's energy and environmental efficiency. The order was placed by Valmet’s local partner Tecnilab Portugal SA, the official distributor for Valmet's wastewater solutions and services in Portugal.

The order was included in Valmet's orders received for the first quarter of 2022. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The delivery takes place during the first half of 2022.

“Our mission is to operate and manage the multi-municipal wastewater sanitation system of Greater Lisbon and Western Portugal, ensuring the quality, continuity, and efficiency of the public wastewater services. This solution will support our efficiency targets with sludge dewatering by increasing the dry content and decreasing the use of polymers,” says Paulo Inocêncio, Responsible for Strategic Studies of the Asset Management Department.

"Reliable solids measurements enable accurate monitoring of the sludge dewatering process and provide valuable process data. Costs can be saved, and process efficiency increased when the measurements are linked with an advanced online sludge dewatering optimizer," explains Amadeu Santos, Country manager Portugal, Automation Systems business line, Valmet.

Technical information about the delivery

The delivery consists of Valmet Total Solids Measurement, Valmet Low Solids Measurement, Valmet Dry Solids measurement and Valmet Sludge Dewatering Optimizer as well as samplers and services.

Valmet Sludge Dewatering Optimizer has been developed especially for optimizing sludge dewatering centrifuges at municipal and industrial wastewater plants. In addition to savings in chemicals, energy and transportation costs, the entire plant capacity can be increased as the number of solids circulating at the plant is smaller.

Automating the dewatering process reduces the need for laboratory sampling and handling. Moreover, it produces online process data and decreases the need for continuous monitoring by plant operators. Optimization, together with reliable solids measurements, improves the plant's energy and environmental efficiency.

Valmet will supply 22 Valmet Total Solids Measurements to the Greater Paris Sanitation Authority’s (SIAAP) Seine Aval wastewater treatment plant in France. The measurements were purchased by the technology provider: the temporary joint-venture between OTV and STEREAU, OTV being the mandatary. The measurements will be installed in the plant’s new primary decantation to accurately measure the total solids of the sludge, produced by lamellar settlers.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the fourth quarter 2021. The measurements will be delivered during the second quarter 2022.

The SIAAP plant is about to undergo a transformation. The existing static settlers are replaced by lamellar settlers, including a new pumping station and an additional pretreatment stage. The goal of the new unit is to increase process performance and to reduce nuisance for the neighborhood. The measurements will help the customer in daily process control to ensure the right sludge concentration for downstream process. In addition, they will bring energy savings and further environmental benefits.

"We were confident about the choice of Valmet’s sensor. We made a two-month trial last summer by installing a Valmet Total Solids Measurement on an existing customer process together with the Valmet team, which fully convinced our client. The results were better than expected, especially considering the short time we had to commission the sensor," says Jerome Caubit, Project Director, OTV.

Valmet will replace an aging third-party automation system to operate EDP’s Vilarinho das Furnas pumped-storage hydropower plant in Vilarinho das Furnas, Portugal.

The order is included in Valmet's orders received of the first quarter 2022. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The complete system will be handed over to the customer in September 2023.

Pumped-storage hydroelectricity method stores energy as gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower to a higher elevation reservoir. It allows energy from different sources to be saved for periods of higher demand. During periods of high electrical demand, the stored water is released through turbines to produce electric power.

“We are very proud to start collaborating with EDP, a key player in the Portuguese energy market. We hope that this first project is the beginning of a long-lasting and fruitful relationship. Valmet’s state-of-the-art hydro plant automation gives customers more accurate control, resulting in more stable and safer operation. Intelligent hydro plant automation can strongly contribute to cleaner and more efficient electricity production, which is in line with EDP’s strong environmental commitment,” says Amadeu Santos, Country Manager, Automation business line, Valmet.

Valmet will supply a new Valmet Defibrator EVO system to the Brazilian company Guararapes. The system will be used for the company´s medium density fiberboard (MDF) production as part of its major expansion at Caçador plant in Santa Catarina state. This will give Caçador the largest MDF capacity in a single plant in all of the Americas and raise the group’s MDF output. The start-up is scheduled for 2022.

The order was included in Valmet's orders received of the first quarter 2021. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Valmet Defibrator EVO SystemValmet Defibrator EVO SystemThe defibrator system is the heart of the MDF plant, since the wood chips are mechanically separated there into the fibers, which has a huge influence on both the final product quality and specific energy consumption.

“Guararapes has been needing more MDF capacity for a long time and the pandemic has stimulated the demand even further. The new plant will be installed alongside the existing MDF lines in Caçador, which will give Brazil one of the most modern MDF plants in the world, being both highly productive and sustainable, and including the latest digital technology such as scanners to check the surface quality,” says Ricardo Pedroso, the CEO of Guararapes.

Valmet was chosen to supply the line for numerous reasons, such as several very good references in Brazil that are already installed and working. In addition, Valmet's innovations in digitalization, remote service, and high-efficiency refining convinced the customer about up-to-date technology. Furthermore, a strong service commitment from Valmet and the proactive lifecycle support strengthened the attractiveness.

“From a technological point of view, the Valmet solution is unique in terms of quality and especially energy savings. This gives the important dual financial benefits, reducing both the ongoing operation expenditure, OPEX, costs and the initial capital expenditure, CAPEX, of the entire MDF line,” says Igor Panassol, Sales Manager, Pulp and Energy business line, Valmet in South America.

Information about Valmet’s delivery

Besides the Valmet Defibrator EVO System, a Valmet Steam Separator PV system will also be supplied, which is the first reference in Latin America.

Information about Guararapes

Guararapes manufactures MDF panels and it is one of the largest plywood panel producer in Latin America. It is currently exporting its panels to over 60 nations. With the recent announcement to invest in the MDF line, the production capacity will increase to over 600.000 m³ per year, becoming one the nation’s leading MDF production companies and totaling about 1,550M m³ per year of production from forest-based panels.
