Valmet to replace turbine automation at Statkraft’s gas power plant in Emden, Germany
Valmet will deliver a turbine automation system to Statkraft’s gas power plant in Emden, Germany. The new system will replace an obsolete third-party turbine controller on a gas turbine. Modern automation will ensure the future availability of the gas turbine to produce peak energy to the local grid.
The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the fourth quarter 2022. The value of the order will not be disclosed. New turbine automation will be commissioned in September 2023.

Valmet has completed the acquisition of NovaTech Automation’s Process Solutions business
Valmet has completed the acquisition of the U.S. based NovaTech Automation’s Process Solutions business.
The acquired business specializes in process control and optimization solutions for batch, continuous and hybrid processes. It serves customers mainly in process industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and chemical products. With a turnover of approximately USD 18 million, it employs 76 people in the United States and the Benelux countries. The acquisition excludes NovaTech Automation’s other divisions.
The NovaTech Automation Process Solutions business will be integrated to Valmet’s Automation Systems business line. The acquired business will be included in Valmet’s financial reporting for the first time in Valmet’s 1st quarter 2023 financial reporting.

Valmet to supply flue gas condensing process to Vantaa Energy in Finland
Valmet will supply a flue gas condensing process to Vantaa Energy’s new high-temperature incineration plant in Vantaa, Finland. The plant is designed to process household and industry waste that is classified as hazardous and not suitable for recycling.
The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the fourth quarter 2022. Its value will not be disclosed, but such an order is typically worth over EUR 15 million. The project will start in 2022 and the plant is scheduled for completion in 2025.
The flue gas condensing equipment recovers heat from the incineration process. The waste heat produced will be utilized in the heating of properties in Vantaa. The waste heat obtained from the plant will reduce the need for using natural gas and fossil fuels and supports the transition to clean energy production.

The delivery will include a complete flue gas cleaning process consisting of an evaporative cooler, a baghouse filter with conditioned dry sorption (semi-dry), a condensing flue gas scrubber with heat recovery and condensate treatment, and a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Valmet to supply a chip washing and defibrating machine system to VRG Dongwha MDF in Vietnam
Valmet will deliver a chip washing and EVO defibrating machine system to VRG Dongwha MDF, a joint stock company in Vietnam.
The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the third quarter 2022. The delivery is planned for September 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed. A project of this size and scope is typically valued at around EUR 3–6 million.

VRG Dongwha and Valmet already have a strong cooperation thanks to the existing two lines of Valmet defibrators and chip wash systems. Now with the delivery of the third chip washing and defibrating machine system we are further strengthening our collaboration,” says Leif Sundberg, Sales Manager, Pulp and Energy, Valmet.
VRG Dongwha’s MDF plant located in Minh Hung, Vietnam. The plant has a total annual capacity of 700,000 m3 MDF.

Valmet’s scope of supply includes the equipment for a new MDF plant such as chip washing and an EVO 70 defibrating machine system. Valmet to deliver two chip washing and defibrator systems to Siempelkamp
Valmet will deliver two chip washing and defibrator systems to Siempelkamp Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH as part of Siempelkamp’s panelboard plant deliveries to two different end customers, one in Europe, one in Asia. The start-ups of the systems are planned for 2023 and the beginning of 2024.

Valmet receives the 17th automation order from Hitachi Zosen Inova – now for the Slough Multifuel energy-from-waste plant in the UK
Valmet will supply automation to the new Slough Multifuel energy-from-waste plant close to London, UK. The order was placed by Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI), the facility's engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
This is the seventeenth time that HZI has chosen Valmet’s automation technology for its energy-from-waste plant projects. The plant is owned by a joint venture between a UK energy company SSE Thermal, and Copenhagen Infrastructure III K/S, a fund managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).
The order was included in Valmet’s orders received for the first quarter of 2022. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The deliveries will take place from early September 2022 to January 2023. The end customer will take over the automation system in late November 2024.
“We benefit from the experience gained in Valmet’s latest UK projects and can implement it in the Slough project. Valmet has been proactive in supporting, answering, and giving ideas to the project,” says Aristeidis Charitos, Technical Project Manager, Slough Project, HZI.
Valmet will supply an automation system to the new Slough Multifuel energy-from-waste plant close to London, UK. This is the 17th time that Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI) has chosen Valmet’s automation technology for its energy-from-waste plant projects.
“The current global semiconductor chip shortage is a burden for all our projects. Due to the fact that Valmet DNA Automation System offers three different models of process stations, Valmet is able to deliver the solution within the project time schedule,” says Adrian Hiemann, DCS System Engineer, Slough Project, HZI.
“The end customer has been satisfied with our Valmet DNA system at the Ferrybridge 1 and 2 energy-from-waste plants delivered in 2012 and 2016. HZI has been our customer since 2008. The cooperation was good this time as well, and we were able to fulfil the technical requirements. For Valmet, this project is important as it continues and expands our market share in the UK energy-from-waste market,” says Rene Neubert, Sales Director, Automation, Valmet, Austria.
After starting full operation in 2024, the Slough Multifuel plant will process around 480,000 tons of residual waste from the Greater London Area per year and will cover the annual power consumption equivalent to approximately 100,000 households.

Valmet’s delivery consists of a Valmet DNA Automation System, a protection system, integrated controls for 11 kV distribution, large screens, an extensive operator interface for the control room, an electrical control system, and 3,200 hardwired signals as well as more than 7,300 links and data points.

Valmet to supply solids measurements and sludge dewatering optimizer to Águas de Portugal wastewater treatment plant in Lisbon, Portugal
Valmet will deliver solids measurements and Valmet Sludge Dewatering Optimizer to Águas do Tejo Atlântico in Alcantara, Lisbon, Portugal. The optimization, together with reliable solids measurements use, aims at improving the plant's energy and environmental efficiency. The order was placed by Valmet’s local partner Tecnilab Portugal SA, the official distributor for Valmet's wastewater solutions and services in Portugal.
The order was included in Valmet's orders received for the first quarter of 2022. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The delivery takes place during the first half of 2022.

Technical information about the delivery
The delivery consists of Valmet Total Solids Measurement, Valmet Low Solids Measurement, Valmet Dry Solids measurement and Valmet Sludge Dewatering Optimizer as well as samplers and services.
Valmet Sludge Dewatering Optimizer has been developed especially for optimizing sludge dewatering centrifuges at municipal and industrial wastewater plants. In addition to savings in chemicals, energy and transportation costs, the entire plant capacity can be increased as the number of solids circulating at the plant is smaller.
Automating the dewatering process reduces the need for laboratory sampling and handling. Moreover, it produces online process data and decreases the need for continuous monitoring by plant operators. Optimization, together with reliable solids measurements, improves the plant's energy and environmental efficiency.

Valmet and Circa to partner in the industrialization of sustainable biochemicals production
Valmet has signed a Heads of Agreement with Circa to industrialize the production of sustainable biochemicals at Circa’s small-scale ReSolute plant in France and future large-scale production plants. Valmet will offer the main machinery and equipment and actively contribute to the development of Circa’s production processes of bio-based renewable solvents. The bio-based solvents will replace harmful petroleum-based solvents used in a wide variety of industries.

The ReSolute plant will produce 1,100 tons of bio-based solvent called CyreneTM. The agreed long-term objective is to develop deployable modules with a capacity of 10-15 thousand tons per annum. The modules can operate separately or in multiples, depending on local feedstock and supporting infrastructure availability. In the second half of 2022, Valmet and Circa will initiate conceptual engineering for a large-scale plant. Circa’s plan is to reach an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons by 2030.
Valmet will offer equipment for biomass handling, a pyrolysis system and a Valmet CFB Boiler for energy production as well as a Valmet DNA Automation System, first for the ReSolute plant project and later on for the future plants.
Valmet has developed its pyrolysis technology since the 1990s at its pilot plant in Tampere, Finland. In 2013, Valmet supplied the world's largest industrial-scale biomass fast pyrolysis plant to Fortum in Joensuu, Finland.

Valmet to start personnel negotiations on temporary layoffs at its valve factory in Finland
The geopolitical situation caused by the crisis in Ukraine and the intensified COVID-19 restrictions in China have reduced the orders at the valve factory in Helsinki, Finland, during spring. The exceptional situation has particularly impacted the factory’s oil and gas projects. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in China also continues to cause challenges related to component availability and logistics.
To adjust production capacity to match the reduced workload at the valve factory in Helsinki, Valmet is initiating personnel negotiations on potential temporary layoffs on May 25, 2022.
The employees within the scope of the negotiations are those in the Flow Control business line’s valve production and related operations in Helsinki, excluding the positioner production unit. The layoffs will be temporary and are estimated to last a maximum of 90 days. The negotiations involve around 340 employees.
Valmet employs about 6,200 people in Finland, about 830 of the employees are in the Flow Control business line.

Valmet to deliver a BioPower heat and power plant and a pretreatment BioTrac system to ORLEN Poludnie S.A. in Poland
Valmet will deliver key technology areas for ORLEN Poludnie’s S.A. planned second generation bioethanol (B2G) plant in Jedlicze, Poland. The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) delivery includes a pretreatment BioTrac system with a capacity to process approximately 400 tons of dry straw per day, a BioPower 48 MWth lignin fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant and a Valmet DNA Automation system.
The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the first quarter 2022. The value of the order will not be disclosed.
The plant will start its operation in 2024. Through this project ORLEN Południe S.A. will increase its share in the biofuels market. In addition, the project will support ORLEN’s ambition to reach the EU target for bio-additives in the liquid fuels market. Bioethanol will be produced from non-food agricultural feedstocks (predominantly cereal straw) sourced mainly from Polish farmers.
Ethanol process byproduct, lignin, is used as fuel in the BioPower CHP plant, producing all steam for the ethanol plant and power.

Technical information about the delivery
The delivery includes a Valmet Pretreatment BioTrac system and a Valmet BioPower heat and power plant. Both installations are controlled by a Valmet DNA automation system with embedded information management and cyber security solutions. The BioTrac pretreatment enables an annual production capacity of 25 000 tons of bioethanol.
Valmet BioPower plant is based on proven bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) combustion technology and flue gas cleaning combined with factory manufactured modules enabling faster project implementation, shorter site time and completion with better quality and lower implementation risks. The fuel capacity of the plant is 48 MWth.
