In a new project with Volvo Cars, Semcon develops the digital workshop information for an upcoming electric vehicle model. The project involves diagnostic, service and spare parts information, and is planned to run through September 2023.

Making sure that workshop technicians always have access to accurate diagnostic information for troubleshooting, as well as service and spare parts information, means that they can more quickly and easily do their jobs – servicing and repairing vehicles. With deep technical expertise and experience in digital information solutions, Semcon’s experts ensure that Volvo Cars technicians have the right conditions for their work.

“Our long experience as a partner to Volvo Cars and several other major clients in the automotive industry makes us a reliable choice for this type of complex delivery. We look forward to supporting Volvo Cars in this new project and in the ongoing transition to fully electrified model programmes,” says David Sondén, General Manager Product Information Sweden at Semcon.

Semcon is supporting Norwegian Hystar to develop their new electrolyser technology for the production of green hydrogen. The aim is to produce up to 150% more hydrogen without using more energy than in conventional processes today. The project is now being expanded and Semcon is providing more expertise in order to automate the production of electrolyser stacks, which convert electricity to hydrogen and oxygen.

Hydrogen production technology using PEM electrolysers is currently well developed, but advanced development of automatic and flexible stack production processes is required in order to achieve large-scale hydrogen production. At the end of 2021, Hystar was granted additional funding from the Research Council of Norway for a project with the aim of optimising and automating the production of high-efficiency PEM electrolysers.

Electrolysers can be produced by similar mass manufacturing methods as fuel cells, a field of technology in which Semcon has extensive knowledge. These groundbreaking mass manufacturing methods are a prerequisite for Hystar to achieve its goal of revolutionising the production of electrolysers.

“We are happy and proud to contribute with our expertise in this Nordic collaboration, which ensures that both knowledge and production can be retained and developed in Sweden and our neighbour Norway,” says Robert Eliasson, Area Manager Production Development at Semcon.

The project, which is planned to run over two years, started in February 2022 on a smaller scale with the hope of expanding over time. Semcon has previously supported Hystar with expertise on stack design, in terms of mechanics and geometry, FEM (Finite Element Method) and CFD (Computational fluid dynamics).

“We are very excited to continue our collaboration with Semcon, and  make sure our electrolysers stacks can be produced cost-effectively, automated, and at high volumes, “ says Alejandro Barnett, CTO at Hystar.

Autonomous vehicles to enhance safety at sawmills

With the help of Semcon, two of Sweden’s largest companies in the forest industry sector, Holmen and Södra, are to examine how self-driving vehicles can improve the work environment and enhance safety at sawmills and other industrial sites. This type of vehicle has great potential for transporting timber and sawn wood within the sites.

Semcon’s autonomy specialists will join forces with the management of production development at Holmen and at Södra to carry out a feasibility study starting autumn 2021. This will include process mapping to identify which of the processes is best suited for autonomy, as well as develop a concept solution and make an assessment of the potential of the technology. If the feasibility study is successful, a pilot project will be planned to test the solution in live production with the aim of putting autonomous vehicles into operation in the future.

“Large, heavy vehicles are used at sawmills in an environment where it is currently unavoidable for them to mix with pedestrians, which could create a risky situation. We can use autonomous vehicles with advanced sensor and AI technology to create safer workplaces, while improving the quality of the activities”, says Mats Larsson, Software & Emerging Tech, Semcon.

Great potential for autonomous vehicles
Both Holmen and Södra carry out long-term and ambitious safety work at their sawmills. There is much to gain through new technology when it comes to areas such as quality, safety, and electrification. This is because even though the production part of a sawmill is often highly automated, there is still great potential for autonomous vehicles to provide transport within the site.

“At Holmen, we are continuously exploring new technology and innovative solutions in order to develop our activities. To ensure the safety of our employees is obviously a top priority for us, and we would therefore like to explore the potential of autonomous vehicles”, says Magnus Malmström, site manager at Holmen’s sawmill in Iggesund.

Autonomy, the next technological leap forward
“In addition to improving the work environment and enhancing safety, self-driving vehicles have proved to be well suited for electrification, which we consider to be an important part of our sustainability work as well as something that benefits our industry”, says Tomas Bengtsson, Director Production Engineering, Södra Wood.

Semcon has extensive experience of developing autonomous solutions in the automotive industry, and recognises the great need for this type of competence in many different industries. In addition to the automotive and forest industry sectors, Semcon also works with autonomous solutions in mining, ports and airports, among others. The feasibility study will be carried out at Holmen’s sawmill in Iggesund and at Södra’s sawmill in Väröbacka.

Many companies digitalise their technical information and training courses in order to enhance the customer experience and strengthen aftermarket business. When Sandvik’s division, Stationary Crushing & Screening, wanted to take that step, it chose Semcon to carry out the analysis for the digitalisation of product information and training courses.

Sandvik’s division, Stationary Crushing & Screening, manufactures machines for stone crushing. These are large and complex machines that require a lot of technical information and training for their correct use and maintenance.

“By digitalising the technical information and developing digital training solutions, we can modernise and enhance the experience for both customers and service technicians. This will make it easier for users to access information, as well as streamline the entire service chain, which contributes to a strengthened aftermarket”, says Lars Löfgren, Business Development Manager at Semcon.

Roadmap shows the way forward
Semcon has teamed up with Sandvik in a joint project to conduct a feasibility study aimed at showing how to add value through digitalised product information by optimising the aftermarket business and meeting the needs of different end users. A “roadmap”  has also been developed, describing how to design and implement a strategy that will take the company from its current state to its desired state.

The objective of digitalising the product information is to support the digital transformation of Sandvik’s division, Stationary Crushing & Screening, and thereby strengthen the aftermarket business, enhance the experience for different users, and at the same time increase cost efficiency by creating and maintaining technical information and training courses. One example of this is the re-use of information between technical information and training courses.

“We chose Semcon on the basis of its broad experience from previous projects with relevant customers in the area of Learning and Content Development. Semcon has been responsive to our needs, has had a very good project structure, as well as close cooperation with us throughout the process. This has been the key to our mutual success”, says Anella Persic Antius, Life Cycle Support Manager for Division, Stationary Crushing & Screening, at Sandvik.

Semcon has provided experts in project management, product information strategy, information architecture, learning and UI (User Interface) to participate in the project.
