Lhyfe (Euronext: LHYFE), one of the world’s pioneers in green and renewable hydrogen production, and VSB Energies Nouvelles, an independent producer of electricity from renewable energy, are announcing the signing of a long-term renewable electricity supply contract or Corporate PPA.

In 2021, VSB Energies Nouvelles commissioned the Buléon wind farm, which it now operates, in the heart of the Morbihan region of Brittany, and with a total capacity of 13.2 MW. Lhyfe Bretagne, a green and renewable hydrogen production site for Brittany which Lhyfe has started building, is also located in Buléon. The facility, which will produce up to 2 tonnes of hydrogen a day (with installed capacity of 5 MW), will be operational in late 2023.

Under this 16-year electricity supply contract, 100% of the green electricity produced by the VSB Energies Nouvelles wind farm in Buléon will be for the Lhyfe Bretagne site, which will supply the local area with green hydrogen for uses related to mobility and industrial processes.

For VSB Energies Nouvelles, this Corporate PPA, which is the first in a long series to come, represents a real growth driver. It also illustrates the expertise of VSB’s teams and their ability to address the problem of intermittency in the production of electricity from renewable sources.

Buléon Wind Farm The Buléon wind farm, located in the heart of Morbihan, has six 110-metre tall Vestas V110 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.2 MW. In total, the park has a total capacity of 13.2 MW, equivalent to the annual power consumption of 13,200 inhabitants. Such power capacity represents 8,435 tonnes of CO2 avoided per year. VSB Energies Nouvelles carried out the entire project independently and manages the wind farm as a private concern. Buléon adds to the six other wind farms already installed by VSB Energies Nouvelles in the Morbihan department, in the municipalities of Mauron, Cruguel, Pleugriffet, Guegon, Lanouee, and Guehenno. An impressive 69,2 MW are in development in Morbihan, 87,2 MW have been built and 28,4 MW are currently in operation.Buléon Wind Farm The Buléon wind farm, located in the heart of Morbihan, has six 110-metre tall Vestas V110 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.2 MW. Lhyfe, through this contract, continues to strengthen its network of renewable electricity supply partners, securing a local and long-term supply of green electricity for the production of its green and renewable hydrogen.

As an operator committed to energy transition, we can only welcome the signing of this agreement, said Mael Lagarde, Managing Director and Owner of VSB Energies Nouvelles. “We are really in a virtuous circle here and in win-win mode. Supplying a hydrogen production facility helps to create green energy while providing an answer to the intermittency of wind turbines and the need for storage. We are really entering a new stage of energy transition here”.

“Thanks to this agreement, we are securing in a local and long-term manner our renewable electricity supply, which is essential for the production of renewable hydrogen. More broadly, we are strengthening our network of green energy suppliers, and thus reinforcing our positioning and our production model.” Matthieu Guesné, CEO and founder of Lhyfe.

Lhyfe (EURONEXT : LHYFE), one of the world’s pioneers in the production of green and renewable hydrogen, is targeting to build a large-scale hydrogen production plant in the Chemical Cluster Delfzijl, situated in the province of Groningen in the North of the Netherlands. The 200 MW plant will have a production capacity of more than 20.000 tons of renewable green hydrogen per year, equivalent to 55 tons per day, which will displace 2,2 Million tons CO2 within 10 years. Lhyfe has already secured the required landplot and the renewable energies connection. Commissioning is planned earliest 2026.

“Delfzijl is an ideal location for renewable green hydrogen production as it has direct access to renewable energies from its offshore wind power plants which are situated off the coast. Groningen is one of Europe’s pioneers when it comes to the energy transition. The region’s goal is to become the leading hydrogen valley of North-Western Europe and to build up a complete value chain from production, storage and transportation of green hydrogen. We fully support this development and are proud to be part of the journey”, said Luc Grare, Head of Central and Eastern Europe at Lhyfe.

Home to a significant industrial and chemical industry, Delfzijl is already a large consumer of hydrogen as a chemical feedstock. That need is set to grow significantly in the future. Lhyfe will be able to support companies in their decarbonisation efforts by supplying them renewable green hydrogen using renewable electricity from the region paired with the electrolysis process.

2022 10 06 093322

“Renewable green hydrogen as an energy carrier will support the transport of offshore generated energy through the country, helping to ease an already congested electricity grid. As such, Lhyfe’s Delfzijl plant will be able to supply green hydrogen throughout the Netherlands, as well as to potential off-takers in Germany and other bordering countries”, said Grare.

The Netherlands aims to be one of Europe’s pioneering countries in green hydrogen, rolling out a hydrogen backbone through the whole country. In the near future, old salt caverns will be converted to store hydrogen along the backbone and will secure a steady flow of green hydrogen to the industrial users in case of days when renewable energy is not available.

Lhyfe is working on a rapid ramp-up of the green and renewable hydrogen market in many European countries. It has the ambition to become a leading European green and renewable hydrogen producer, targeting a total installed capacity of 3 GW by 2030. To achieve this goal, the company is establishing decentralized hydrogen ecosystems of various plant sizes throughout Europe - including the Delfzijl project. The company is also setting new standards in the offshore hydrogen sector, inaugurating the world’s first offshore renewable green hydrogen production pilot on the 22nd of September.

The project execution is subject to obtaining required operation licences and building permission as well as financial investment decision.

Lhyfe, a world pioneer and pure player in renewable green hydrogen Lhyfe (Euronext: LHYFE) and the Swedish local energy company Trelleborgs Energi have joined forces in a pre-study that aims to build a local renewable hydrogen production system in southernmost Sweden. As committed change makers, both companies are set to act now for the climate, focusing on green hydrogen as a solution. The results are due to be presented in the summer 2022.

The initial study focuses on 5 MW of green hydrogen production capacity, in Trelleborg. The study covers the questions of energy supply, production capacity, technology selection and location, as well as utilization of waste heat and oxygen. Trelleborg is a major transport hub that will require hydrogen to supply refuelling stations as well as to already ordered hydrogen vehicles. The number of heavy trucks passing through Trelleborg harbour is forecasted to increase from today’s 800,000 per year, to 1.8 million in 2026. Situated in the Öresund region, this project study in Trelleborg may contribute to securing hydrogen supply for both mobility and industry in efforts to reach zero carbon emissions. The utilization of waste heat and oxygen (a by-product of hydrogen production) is already being discussed with potential partners.

Lhyfe, which is counting among the world’s largest and most advanced players in the green hydrogen market with 93 projects in development in Europe (more than 4.8 GW of total installed capacity) and a first industrial plant inaugurated in September 2021, connects its production sites directly to local renewable energy sources to fuel local industry and mobility uses.

We are proud to work hand in hand with Trelleborgs Energi, a company in a city that is putting green hydrogen on the Swedish map and above all also into action, says Björn Arvidsson, Area Manager Nordics & UK at Lhyfe. We share a common DNA: we both want to act now for the climate, with focus on renewable hydrogen. It is inspiring to collaborate to further propel the energy transition in the region.

The joint pre-study will point towards an optimum initial set up for the production of hydrogen, using renewable electricity.

We want to create sustainable energy solutions locally and renewable green hydrogen is part of that plan, says Magnus Sahlin, CEO of Trelleborgs Energi. Hydrogen is a clever, multi-purpose energy carrier and can play a part in solving the climate challenge. We believe in making a real difference, in “walk the talk”, and our renewable hydrogen initiative is one way of doing that.

Trelleborgs Energi and Lhyfe are both committed to transitioning the energy sector and pushing the boundaries of possible solutions.

We want to win the climate fight, says Björn Arvidsson. That means investing in new technology, and building and operating green hydrogen production as soon as possible. This is targeted for 2024 here in the very south of Sweden. We strongly believe in the need and value of green hydrogen within industry and mobility. This project confirms Lhyfe's strategic presence on the Swedish market, from south to north!

We need to use all the means available to us, to combat climate change, adds Magnus Sahlin. We are serious about our commitment to changing the energy sector to better, sustainable solutions for the future. Hydrogen has been used for almost a century, but it has proven to be a smart, modern solution, that can make a difference for us here and now.

Renewable hydrogen produced directly from wind power becomes reality. At the end of August, just a year after the foundation stone was laid for this industrial facility like none else in the world, Lhyfe, a pure player in renewable hydrogen, began producing its first hundred kilograms of ecological hydrogen and is ready for industrial scale production.

Following a few days of testing at this first site, for which the foundation stone was laid only a year ago in Bouin (Vendée, France), Lhyfe has produced 627 kilograms of renewable hydrogen, using an electrolyser powered by wind turbines a few meters away.

2021 09 28 103611

The purpose of this initial production was to finalize tests, before the end of September when industrial production and sales will start for new partners whose names will be revealed soon. Lhyfe will henceforth produce 300 kilograms of renewable hydrogen a day, before ramping up to a tonne a day in the coming months.

This industrial production facility for renewable hydrogen, connected directly to a wind farm, is a unique technical achievement and the first of its kind in the world. This site is fully in line with the acceleration of hydrogen deployment around the world and in the strategic plans of a growing number of countries.

Reliable winds far out in the North Sea are an exceptional renewable resource, yet remote locations create challenges around grid connectivity and intermittency of supply. This unique, flexible solution will solve this issue by providing an off take for the electricity produced in the immediate vicinity of the windfarm and aims to use existing platforms, pipelines, terminal infrastructure, and offshore equipment leveraging the existing infrastructure to reduce costs.

With governments pushing net zero initiatives forward, this concept offers an alternative deployment of existing assets that provides both a source of green hydrogen and enhances the commercial feasibility of remote offshore wind projects.

"With our expertise in complex offshore operations and fleet management, Borr Drilling will leverage its core capabilities to evaluate the adoption of this alternative energy source in an environment with a large untapped potential. While we will continue to work in our traditional drilling market, this project reinforces our ambition to continuously improve the sustainability of our activities and align our service offering with the changing expectations of our customers and stakeholders." says Darren Sutherland, Director of Operations at Borr Drilling.

"Lhyfe is already producing renewable hydrogen in industrial quantities onshore, with a direct connection to renewable energy, pumping sea water and purifying it to feed the electrolysis process. This is hence a production process already considering offshore harsh conditions. Over the last few years, we have also been working on different projects to deploy our production process offshore. Offshore wind offers the greatest potential for sustainable hydrogen production because of the cost effectiveness that can be achieved through scalability and technological innovation. The market is yet to deliver a flexible solution that benefits from the existing infrastructure in the North Sea and Lhyfe wants to be at the forefront of this change by creating a world-first green hydrogen production of this kind," says Matthieu Guesné, CEO at Lhyfe.

"With years of experience in successful delivery of complicated offshore jack up operations, complex structural projects and offshore process systems we are excited to be the interface that brings together the interest of Lhyfe in offshore markets and expands on Borr Drilling's expertise in jack-up rig equipment. Our unique value here is that we are multilingual in terms of the engineering and operational needs of oil and gas assets, and green energy processing systems. We're looking forward to taking this from concept to reality," says James Larnder, Managing Director at Aquaterra Energy.

While the concept is still in its early stages, the consortium welcomes any interested parties to submit enquiries.
