Seat valves with extended pressure and temperature. Bürkert now offers particularly durable and low-maintenance on/off and control valves for switching and controlling gases, liquids and steam in the process and food industries that are suitable for media pressures up to 25 bar and temperatures up to 230 °C.

Low-maintenance on/off and control valves are essential in the food and process industry. They control the flow of gases, steam or liquids, for example in auxiliary processes such as CIP (cleaning-in-place), reverse osmosis or temperature control. Bürkert now offers a wide range of electric motor and pneumatically operated on/off and control valves specially suited for these applications, with extended pressure and temperature ranges. Thanks to special sealing materials, the valves with stainless steel valve bodies work without any problems with media up to 25 bar gauge pressure and temperatures between -40 °C and 230 °C (Image). The rated service life at 200 °C is more than one million switching cycles. Devices and seals therefore only very rarely need to be replaced, which in turn increases system availability. Sealing materials and lubricants suitable for foodstuffs, drinking water, fuel gases or oxygen allow the valves to be used with other media, for example for cleaning and flushing purposes, for heat carriers or saturated steam at 20 bar and 215 °C. So they can be used to switch and control all common gases and liquids for heating and cooling purposes in the specific process as well as in traditional CIP processes. It is also possible to use them with heat transfer oils e.g. in conjunction with alternative heating concepts.

Extensive assortment of process valves
The high-pressure and high-temperature valves are available in different versions with straight-seat on/off and control valves as well as with angle seat on/off and control variants. Depending on the version, the stainless steel bodies offer flange, weld, thread or clamp connections in DNs from DN10 to 100 or NPS 3/8” to 4”. Design details take into account the special requirements of the areas of application. Swivel plates, for example, increase seat tightness while optimised wipers extend the service life of the self-adjusting packing. Different plug and seat sets in metallic or soft-sealing variants allow an exact adaptation to the respective operating medium. The on/off valves with media flow below the valve seat for water and other liquid media prevent pressure surges (water hammer). This reduces maintenance and replacement costs, especially when no service personnel are on site.

Noise insulation and heat recovery in plant components and machines lead to increased ambient and media temperatures during operation. Bürkert plunger valves Type 7011 and Type 7012 come with various approvals and master this challenge at media temperatures of up to 140°C and ambient temperatures of up to 70°C.

In many applications, valves also have to work reliably at higher temperatures due to increased sound insulation and heat recovery in plant components and machines. Such applications can be found in compressors, gas compressors, HVAC systems, sterilisers in machine and apparatus engineering as well as in testing and analysis technology. The compact, direct-acting plunger valves Type 7011 (2/2-way) and Type 7012 (3/2-way) from Bürkert Fluid Control Systems (see company text box) are specially designed for this purpose. They enable safe switching at media temperatures of up to 140°C and ambient temperatures of up to 70°C as well as a 100% duty cycle. This makes them suitable for dosing gas, steam and both cold and hot water.

Due to the high vertical range of manufacture at Bürkert, tailored solutions are also possible, e.g. individual voltage values or special fluidic designs. The valves are always supplied as complete, ready-to-use units, including coil and fluidics. This simplifies the ordering process and facilitates goods receipt for customers.

Reliable worldwide use

The plunger valves Type 7011 and Type 7012 are offered with approvals for worldwide use. For instance, each valve already comes with a coil system for the North American market. From spring 2021, variants will be available for fuel gases according to regulation DVGW EN 161 of the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water. Further, the product range will be expanded from summer 2021 to include encapsulated variants for use in potentially explosive areas.

Bürkert is expanding its portfolio of mass flow meters (MFMs) and mass flow controllers (MFCs), Types 8742 and 8746, for gases to include variants with a standard signal and PROFIBUS-DP interface. The new generation enables simple device replacement or plant modernisation, while ensuring the usual high measuring accuracy and low-maintenance operation. Further, the robust housing allows unprotected field use, even in Ex Zone 2.

Measuring and controlling gases poses challenges for operators of plants with a long operational life. On the one hand, they want to use the latest measurement technology and, on the other hand, this technology must communicate via existing interfaces. The fluid specialists at Bürkert Fluid Control Systems therefore now offer their proven MFCs/MFMs, Types 8742 and 8746, as versions with an analogue or PROFIBUS-DP interface.

he thermal MEMS sensor is located directly in the gas flow and achieves very fast response times for highly dynamic measurements or gas control, for example in metal and glass production and processing, fermentation processes or filling and packaging machines. The MFMs/MFCs conform to FDA and USP Class VI and can be used in the pharmaceutical and food industries as well. A robust electronics housing with optional conformity to ATEX/IEC Ex Zone 2 Cat. 3G/D ensures safety in the field. As a result of the interface extension, even existing plants with established data acquisition can be easily upgraded to the latest generation of devices. High-level dynamics and measuring accuracy with very short response or setting times do not depend on the state of interface technology. Nevertheless, the latest MFCs/MFMs, Types 8742 and 8746, offer extended pressure and flow ranges as well as additional, application-specific software functions.

Flexible technology
The MFCs/MFMs operate in the nominal flow rate range of 0.010 lN/min to 160 lN/min (Type 8742) or 20 lN/min to 2500 lN/min (Type 8746). Optionally, up to four real gas calibrations for various gases and mixtures can be stored in the device. Gas changeovers, for example for fermenters or molten metal treatment, are thus possible without any problems.

The entire range of new generation devices feature uniform M12 standard connectors for communication, ensuring easy installation and a reliable supply of spare parts. Thanks to the integrated configuration memory, devices can be exchanged quickly and easily via plug & play.
