Rugged field transmitter provides innovative functionality, improved measurement performance, and ease of use for applications in harsh environment conditions.

February 16, 2021 – Endress+Hauser launches iTEMP TMT142B, new generation smart temperature transmitter with Bluetooth. The transmitter delivers highly accurate and reliable measurements, wireless communication via Bluetooth, and user-friendly operation—all packaged in a robust single-chamber field housing. The technology offers significant improvements in process efficiency and plant availability while reducing costs.

2021 02 17 094556In industrial process engineering applications, temperature transmitters are an important link between temperature sensors in the process and the higher levels of automation. Measurement instruments are often installed in difficult-to-access locations, which frequently makes commissioning, operation and servicing more difficult.

To address these and other issues, the transmitter features a highly secure integrated Bluetooth interface that enables users to wirelessly visualize measured values, NAMUR NE 017 diagnostic information, as well as perform configuration tasks. The device is extremely easy and fast to operate using your phone or tablet and the Endress+Hauser SmartBlue app. No special tools required. Access to the device is password-protected, and Endress+Hauser security provisions for Bluetooth communication complies with the highest standards.

The newly developed backlit display provides excellent readability under all environmental conditions, both in the dark and bright sunlight. Diagnostic messages are highlighted when the normally white background turns red.

The conversion of different sensor signals into a stable, standardized output signal (4 to 20 mA) represents a logistical challenge as it often requires multiple transmitter variations. To meet this challenge, the configurable single-channel device transmits converted signals from resistance sensors (RTD), thermocouples (TC), resistances (Ω) and voltage transmitters (mV) via the 4 to 20 mA signal or the HART 7 communication.

iTEMP TMT142B temperature transmitter is designed for safe operation in hazardous areas as certified by international approvals (ATEX, CSA C/US, IECEx). Safe operation is enhanced by the incorporation of an integrated overvoltage protection that protects the device from damage and permits continued functionality after common upset events.

As the food industry is shifting to recyclable food packaging, paper-based materials come up as a strong contender. The look and feel of the packaging  is an important differentiating factor for end consumers. This sets high demands on the print quality.

“The new flexoprinting machine assures great accuracy of the printouts and a very high quality”, says Jakub Gunert, Plant Manager in Jatne.

The importance of flexible packaging will grow substantially in the coming years as paper-based packaging is efficient both in terms of the amount of materials used and easy recyclability.

“With this investment we are strenghtening our capabilities to further improve the quality and efficiency in all of our product categories, ”, says Andreas Rothschink.

In addition to food packaging, the new machine in Jante will also serve ream wrapper customers.

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) has passed a notable business milestone by selling the 150,000th Bredel peristaltic hose pump to a mining industry customer in Mexico.  The past decade has seen a huge increase in the uptake of Bredel hose pumps in sectors such as mining and construction, where they meet strict environmental regulations in very tough working conditions.

It has been over half a century since Bredel developed the peristaltic hose pump for industrial use. Today, these high-performance units transfer and dose a whole host of aggressive, viscous and abrasive fluids and solids in sectors that include brewing, water treatment, construction, chemical and mining. A particularly fast-growing application at present is chemical transfer duties in the production of lithium-ion batteries. The single biggest order to date for Bredel hose pumps was 174 APEX units to a lithium-ion battery materials manufacturer in China.

The sale of the 150,000th pump to a customer in Mexico was part of a consignment shipped from the Bredel manufacturing plant in Delden, Netherlands, that constituted 16 pumps across eight different models. The combined flow of these pumps is circa 1,560 l/min.

Decade of innovation

Bredel pumps continue to evolve, with many notable achievements arriving in the past 10 years. A good example is the APEX range, which was introduced in 2012 and expanded in 2015. APEX pumps are designed to offer a highly competitive price/performance ratio. The range offers flow rates up to 6,200 l/h and discharge pressure to 8 bar, while the wider Bredel hose pump range includes units that provide flow up to 108,000 l/h and pressure to 16 bar.

With regard to the operating principle, Bredel pumps have no seals, valves, diaphragms, stators, glands or other costly hardware to replace, ensuring they can be easily maintained in-situ without relocation to a workshop. Only the hose requires occasional replacement, which is a simple task.

2021 02 17 092732

Long operating life

Hose technology from Bredel has also taken a number of notable steps forward in recent years. A case in point is the Bredel NR Endurance, which made its market debut in 2018. This advanced hose provides up to 50% longer life in abrasive pumping applications, as exemplified recently by a customer in the chemical industry.

The chemical plant pumps PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) slurry up to 1000 cPs viscosity. Using an optimised set-up, the standard rubber hose from Bredel lasted for 4,468,800 occlusions, which is equivalent to 110 days or 2,660 hours. However, by switching to the Bredel NR Endurance, operating life extended to 7,056,000 occlusions, approximately 175 days or 4,200 hours (a 57% gain). This success contributed to ROI on its new Bredel hose pumps within 12 months.

Direct sales

Today, WMFTG offers direct sales of Bredel pumps in 43 countries and growing, with Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic (including Slovakia) joining the list in 2021. All of these countries have existing or recently established sales offices staffed by WMFTG’s own experienced applications engineers and product specialists. Customers therefore benefit from the convenience and personal attention that direct salespeople offer.

To support its sales efforts, significant investment at the Bredel plant in Delden is facilitating even faster deliveries to customers. The recent arrival of an advanced CNC turn-mill centre that is able to machine components featuring both cylindrical and prismatic features in a single set-up, not only avoids the need for two separate machines but reduces lead times substantially. Complete with automated loading/unloading and an advanced storage system, the investment totalled €3.4 million.

MEWP technician apprenticeship in high demand

The first wave of inductions to a new specialist apprenticeship aimed at certifying MEWP technicians that was developed with assistance IPAF is now confirmed.

The first wave of inductions to a new specialist apprenticeship aimed at certifying MEWP technicians that was developed with assistance from the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is complete, with ten places now confirmed.

2021 02 11 122801The Level 3 Lift Truck and Powered Access Technician apprenticeship was developed to meet growing demand in the hire and maintenance industry, in which it is acknowledged that basic mechanical qualifications alone are not necessarily sufficient grounding for technicians and service personnel inspecting, maintaining and repairing specialist lifting equipment involving sophisticated battery systems, hydraulics and other systems not found in other types of plant machinery.

The new apprenticeship forms part of IPAF’s Roadmap to Qualified MEWP Technician or Engineer Status, and the first cohort of apprentices is now finalised, with a confirmed start date of 19 April at provider institution North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College.

Richard Whiting, IPAF’s UK & Ireland Market General Manager, who led on developing the IPAF Roadmap, comments: “It is very positive that in National Apprenticeship Week this newly developed pathway to certification is already proving very popular, and that both existing employees in the powered access workforce and new recruits to our industry are set to benefit as part of this first tranche of inductees.

“We are pleased to welcome North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College as an Associate Member of IPAF, and delighted that the first cohort of service technician apprentices beginning in April is now complete, with attention turning to a second wave of inductions for September this year.

“Wider interest is such that the college is already anticipating it will extend its next intake to two full cohorts in September, so I urge any IPAF members who would like to recruit or add someone on their existing staff to this new specialist apprenticeship to get in touch with the college or visit the website for details.

“Instructors at the college are all experienced lift truck instructors and they will be upskilling and increasing their knowledge of powered access by completing their IPAF Operator training and MEWPs for Managers course. IPAF is providing the college with Andy Access Safety posters, technical guidance documents and other relevant materials, while our member firms including CTE, GT Access, Skyjack and Niftylift have all offered or provided equipment for apprentices to train on.

“We wish all the first inductees to the new apprenticeship well and offer our thanks to the college and our members for their support and generosity in helping get this vital apprenticeship off the ground.”
