2014 07 29 092805 poyry logoPaavo Lipponen, former prime minister of Finland, presented a report on Arctic Development Opportunities in Helsinki. Pöyry has contributed substantial expertise to this report. It forms the basis of the discussion on how the Arctic could sustainably drive a new kind of financial growth in Europe.

The report indicates that the Arctic has major potential in the areas of industry and logistics, for example. The area has raw material deposits for biorefining, mining, and energy industries, as well as tourism and fishery potential. If marine transport becomes possible via the Northern Sea Route it would shorten the distance between Asia and Europe by one-third, and corresponding reductions would also take place in traffic emissions and piracy risks.

The report also addresses the area's security risks and environmental issues. It reviews the policies, investments and other operations of different countries, and the opportunities that the development of the area offers to Finland in particular.

"I would like to thank Pöyry and the expert team for their excellent work. I hope that the report will inspire different parties to develop Arctic strategies and operations in a more determined and sustainable way", says Lipponen.

"Pöyry, being an international company with Finnish roots, considers the Arctic to be a very topical theme, and we wanted to dig deeper into it once we got the opportunity to do so. We have solid expertise in industry, energy and infrastructure, which we have used in the reporting work. We are happy and honoured to have contributed to this project", says Thomas Ehrnrooth, Senior Advisor, Pöyry Management Consulting.
