The project i2030 is aiming to provide an improved railway infrastructure for the greater Berlin area. As part of this, AFRY was assigned to plan the connection of the Havelland region to Berlin.

2019 11 25 090513For improving the Havelland region’s link to Berlin and provide sustainable mobility in the German capital area, an attractive range of train connections is essential. This requires the expansion of the railway line between Berlin Spandau and Nauen.

For a line of approximately 23 km, the expansion of the current two regional/long-distance rail tracks to four tracks, and the extension of the S-Bahn via Spandau station to Falkensee or Finkenkrug, are being analyzed by AFRY experts, who will also evaluate the construction of new stopping points in Berlin and the expansion of existing stopping points. In addition, the feasibility of an S-Bahn tunnel in the section from Stresow to Klosterbuschweg is being examined in order to generate additional capacity at Spandau station for regional and long-distance traffic.

"We are delighted to be part of this important project, which will create more climate-friendly mobility for around 3.5 million people in Berlin. AFRY has many years of experience with rail expansion projects of this kind, which we will bring to this project," says Business Unit Manager Michael Backes.

The pilot project is part of the Swedish Transport Administration's program for electrification of the state road network.

2021 06 22 115950Electric roads can be a complement to the fossil-free transport system of the future. The Swedish Transport Administration's program for electrification of the state road network, studies how different types of electrification can be combined to achieve the best effect.

As part of the program, at least one pilot of electric roads for heavy freight traffic will be carried out. The purpose is to show and verify the technology for the entire electric road system – including business models and payment systems. Electrification in this context entails dynamic charging while driving, battery operation with stationary charging, and fuel cells.

The pilot section will be built on one of the two road sections where the development of road plans is underway, both are approximately 20 kilometers long with two lanes in each direction: E20 between Hallsberg and Örebro, and road 73 between Västerhaninge and Nynäshamn.

AFRY's assignment, which runs until 2026, is to produce tender documents for turnkey contracts and construction site follow-up. The order value amounts to approximately SEK 12.5 million.

— We are proud to contribute to this pilot project, which is an important milestone towards the vision of fossil-free transports. At AFRY, we want to accelerate the sustainable transition, and in this project, we have the opportunity to use our expertise to make a difference, says Kajsa Rosén, Business Area Manager Transportation, AFRY.

A green battery increasing the annual net energy production of the power plant complex by 260 GWh

2019 11 25 090513The Kühtai storage power plant project, another storage lake and a pumped storage power plant are being built as the second upper stage of the existing Sellrain-Silz power plant group. With this upper stage the overall efficiency of the power plant group in electricity generation can be sustainably increased. The additional storage volume increases the flexibility and functionality of the overall system. More available water enables electricity to be produced over a longer period of time. In phases with a lot of generation from solar and wind power, more energy potential is therefore stored in the large lakes at high altitude.

The planned Kühtai storage facility will not only store water for pump circulation. By capturing water in the rear of the Stubai Valley and in the Sulz and Winnebach valleys, an additional 260 million kWh of electricity can be generated from natural inflow alone.

Key figures of the Kühtai storage power plant:
  • Kühtai storage capacity: around 31 million m3.
  • Kühtai 2 power plant: average capacity of 130 MW in turbine mode and 140 MW in pump mode
  • Length of the bypass system: around 25 km from the rear Stubai Valley to Kühtai
  • Catchment area: around 68 km2
  • Electricity generation from nat. Inflow: 260 GWh / year

The Kühtai 2 power plant, including the headrace, connects the Finstertal and Kühtai reservoirs. The cavern excavated for this purpose is located at a depth of 174 m below the surface. The power plant is designed for combined turbine and pump operation. Up to 90 m3 of water per second will flow through the two machine sets.

The cavern has connections to the outside via an access tunnel and a drainage tunnel. Only the portals of these two tunnels are visible in the area.

AFRY's assignment covers the execution design of the main caverns including structural calculations, coordination with electro-mechanical (EM) parts, preparation of formwork and reinforcement drawings and a 3-D coordination model of the main structures of the pumped storage power plant (PSPP). The 3-D Model forms the basis for the incorporation of the system in Building Information Modeling (BIM).

The overall schedule for AFRY's services is about 66 months.

This is a continuation of AFRY's outstanding experience in the development and design of PSPP globally.

“We are very pleased to continue our good cooperation with TIWAG in executing this important project. This award further strengthens our leading position in the development of pumped storage power plants worldwide with the goal to become No 1 in Design of PSPP,” says Ernst Zeller, Regional Director of AFRY Austria GmbH.

The Danish Road Directorate has entered into a new framework agreement with AFRY. The framework agreement covers planning, construction and operation of all intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and applications on the Danish state roads, and has an estimated value of 196 million SEK.

”We have worked with the Danish Road Directorate for more than 25 years and we are very happy to continue to help maintain Denmark’s infrastructure and help thousands of people in Denmark moving from A to B in an efficient, safe and environmentally safe manner,” says Kenneth Habo, Business Unit Manager for Transportation at AFRY.

2021 04 13 093459

The activities that are included in the framework agreement are going to ensure ongoing operation and development of traffic control systems and traffic signal installations, which will be carried out in close cooperation with the Road Directorate. This includes equipment on the roads, central surveillance and management systems, as well as maintenance performed to ensure the functioning of traffic facilities and the technical standards.According to the Danish Road Directorate the amount of traffic is going to increase on the roads in Denmark in the future. In order to avoid problems on the state roads, to ensure traffic flow and provide good service to the road users, traffic management is going to play a significant role. For this task there is a shared focus on the green transition and working with sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“Efficient operation and maintenance of traffic management and signal systems helps reduce CO2 emissions, because traffic becomes more free-flowing with fewer stops and interruptions. Red lights and traffic jams on the roads mean waiting time for the road users, extra fuel consumption and higher CO2 emissions”, says Susan Appel, Team Manager Traffic at AFRY.
