Global energy consultancy Xodus has established a new office in Melbourne to support the energy transition across the east coast of Australia.

The Australian energy market has been important to Xodus since it first established a presence in Perth in 2007. The decision to open a second base was driven by the expected rise of offshore wind on the east coast, with the energy firm looking to support both operators and investors in the region to realise value through buildable, bankable and approvable offshore wind projects.

2022 06 03 110057Rebecca Hewlett, originally from Australia and Xodus’ Global Renewables and Environment Director will return home from Edinburgh after more than a decade of leading Xodus’ renewables and environment teams to continue her global role and head up the new office in South Yarra.

A Melburnian, Rebecca has witnessed the quick acceleration of offshore wind in Victoria from afar and is now thrilled to be returning home to play an important role in the growth of the emerging renewables sector.

She said: “It feels like the right time for both Xodus and myself to be in Melbourne. Victoria is looking towards cleaner technology and there will be many exciting projects for us to target over the next few years.

Rebecca will initially be joined by a small team in Melbourne, working seamlessly with the Perth office and with the support of Xodus’ experts from around the world.

She explained: “Our diverse team has extensive global experience in supporting offshore wind projects and establishing the economic opportunities which accompany them. We understand the complexities of the development process and work collaboratively from front end design to project completion, while also facilitating local, regional and national policies to make sure local companies get the chance to work on these projects.

“This is why it was crucial to me to bring everything I have learned back to the heart of the nascent Australian offshore wind industry.

“Having supported approvals for some of the UK’s earliest fixed and floating wind projects and provided extensive support to the recent ScotWind leasing process, I’m now looking forward to catching up with old contacts as well as building relationships with new players in the industry, to share our ambitions of having a real impact on the future of Australian energy.”

This week sees the commencement of the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021. The Act enables the construction, operation and decommissioning of offshore electricity infrastructure and provides a clear framework for investors to pursue licenses for offshore wind developments.

A stable legislative framework, high-quality wind resources, and the world’s urgent need to decarbonise mean that Australia is primed to become an offshore wind investment destination.

As well as offshore wind, Xodus is also looking to support the growth of decommissioning and hydrogen in Victoria and the other east coast states.

Steve Swindell, managing director of Xodus Group added: “Over the last 15 years, we have gained a strong reputation in Australia with industry and government alike. During this time, our work has grown considerably right across the energy sector and this new office will provide a base for us to be at the heart of the energy transition on the Australian east coast.

“We see significant growth in offshore wind, as well as decommissioning and hydrogen over the coming years. With Rebecca’s local knowledge and expertise backed by her global team of experts, it means we can quickly engage with clients and deploy our services to support a responsible energy future for Australia.”

Global energy consultancy Xodus has completed a major benchmarking emissions review for a leading Middle East oil operator’s full asset portfolio, demonstrating significant emissions and cost savings.

The team identified more than 100 emissions reduction opportunities as a result of the site studies, representing a minimum 20% reduction in total CO2 equivalent. A third of the improvements can be easily implemented with low or no capital expenditure required. The complete reduction potential would deliver overall savings of $10 - $15 million per year.

2022 05 03 095920The six-month project reviewed scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, establishing the foundations for a sustainable reduction action plan. Scope 1 covers direct emissions at the production stage, scope 2 covers indirect emissions from generation and scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions.

The Xodus team also reviewed national and international guidance, legislation and policy with existing internal processes, identifying best practices, peer benchmarking and recommendations for the development of an internal emissions and energy efficiency framework.

Natasha Howlett, emissions lead at Xodus said: “The comprehensive review of greenhouse gas emissions gives our client a clear understanding of their emissions baseline along with a robust hopper of improvement opportunities and how best to prioritise these for implementation in order to  decarbonise a portfolio of assets.

“This exercise has demonstrated this client’s ambitions as a decarbonisation leader for the region. Oil and gas operators are looking to responsibly reduce emissions and ultimately achieve net zero. Benchmarking and opportunity identification are vital first steps in order to ensure that this complex journey to net zero is manageable and will deliver big impacts when it comes to cutting both emissions and costs.”

Xodus has built up a wealth of experience and learnings from developing emissions reductions strategies in the UK and other global regions, which can help Middle East operators as they strive to meet new country-level targets being set.

Saudi Arabia has pledged to bring its carbon emissions down to net zero by 2060 and the UAE by 2050. Bahrain and Israel have also made net zero pledges while Qatar has set out a plan to cut emissions by 25% by 2030. Given the scale of oil and gas production from the Middle East, sustained incremental emissions reductions from production assets can make a significant impact on global climate targets.

Global energy consultancy Xodus has launched a new report urging a bolder vision to enable the UK to become a global leader in the adoption of hydrogen.

Titled, ‘The UK - the Global Hydrogen Centre’ and produced for the SPE Offshore Europe virtual conference, 7-10 September 2021, the research suggests the UK is ideally placed geographically, technically, financially and politically to be a global low carbon hub, spanning both green and blue hydrogen production and export.

The report urges UK companies to adopt a bolder approach to hydrogen, to become global players and the leaders in Europe, gaining associated first-mover advantages on the back of an ambitious hydrogen development programme. With hydrogen infrastructure being classified as a ‘low-regret investment’, the UK should become the first country to blend significant amounts of hydrogen into a national gas network.

Furthermore, the UK government is encouraged to resist the temptation to deliver only green hydrogen to the continent as this is not in the country’s best interest. Rather than catering to a ‘green only’ ideal, the report advocates for blue or teal UK low carbon hydrogen, which is considered a low carbon and commercially accessible technology.

By creating apprenticeship opportunities early on, the UK can ensure its domestic workforce will be ready when required later this decade. A long-term joined up approach to the market would provide the freedom necessary for positive decisions to be made on which elements and aspects of this new supply chain are most beneficial to attract.

Kent Massey, principal advisor at Xodus, said: “Low carbon hydrogen has many advantages for the UK. Our abundant wind energy, extensive oil and gas infrastructure and proximity to major industrial centres mean that we should make the best use of this opportunity before it passes us by. Even given the scepticism surrounding hydrogen, we are in a place where to not lead in hydrogen would be a wasted opportunity.

“The technology in both green and blue hydrogen is sufficiently developed to enable world-scale projects to be planned but is also immature enough to enable UK engineering and technology firms to optimise and refine the processes. To miss this once-in-a-generation opportunity to position the UK as a leader in hydrogen would be irresponsible for all of us.”

In the UK Government’s ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution, it has committed to develop 5GW of low-carbon production capacity by 2030, with plans to create several renewable energy hubs based around hydrogen and CCUS.

The report is being presented at the SPE Offshore Europe virtual conference on Thursday 9th September 2021 at 15:30 hours in the hydrogen technical session running from 14:30-16:00 BST hours. The conference is free to attend and registration is open here.

Global energy consultancy Xodus is assessing the infrastructure and modifications required to enable electrification of Harbour Energy’s Central North Sea assets following the successful delivery of a power optimisation study examining the opportunities available to rationalise the generation systems on the Everest and Lomond assets.

Implementing electrification on offshore assets can reduce operational expenditure, increase uptime across all assets and minimise carbon emissions to atmosphere.

Everest PlatformEverest Platform

The Oil & Gas Authority’s UKCS Energy Integration Report last year calculated that electrification could abate UKCS oil and gas operational emissions by 2-3MtCO2 p.a. by 2030, which is the equivalent of reducing 20% of today’s production emissions, rising to 40% by 2030. It also noted that platform electrification could extend the operating life of existing assets and achieve cost efficiencies in the development of new oil and gas fields.

Xodus performed an in-depth, integrated subsea and topsides study to assess the scope and scale of the project required to electrify the assets. The company also analysed the operational savings that could be realised in terms of fuel usage and maintenance burden across all assets from now until cessation of production.

James McAreavey, Concept Development Manager at Xodus said: “A study of this nature requires an integrated multi-discipline engineering team that understands the critical elements of both renewable energy and traditional oil and gas operations in order to identify the true challenges and opportunities associated with large scale electrification of existing oil and gas assets.

“This study has the potential to provide essential input to the wider oil and gas community within the North Sea to enable a significant reduction of carbon emissions from offshore operations.”

Xodus’ analysis has assessed a wide range of low carbon power sources and extent of electrification on the existing assets to help inform Harbour Energy’s future plans to transition to Net Zero.

Head of Low Carbon Transition for Scottish Enterprise, Andy McDonald, said: “The Offshore Wind Cluster Builder will be an important project to support the development and growth of the offshore wind supply chain across Scotland. SMEs will have access to services to collaborate, grow and secure business within the offshore wind industry locally, nationally and internationally leveraging Scottish capabilities to strengthen the offshore wind supply chain for a sustainable industry and net zero future economy.

“The new project will align with the work of DeepWind and Forth & Tay Offshore to ensure Scotland benefits from the many opportunities presented by offshore wind.”

David Webster of Forth & Tay Offshore said: “We are looking to build on the opportunity from the growing pipeline of Scottish, UK and global offshore wind projects and the need to grow local content in the sector. We are shaping the resource provided by Scottish Enterprise for the development of a competitive supply chain in Scotland.  We aim to increase Scotland's success in winning orders for projects inside and outside Scotland's waters and to help support and scale up the Scottish supply chain.”

Paul O’Brien of DeepWind added: “The Cluster Builder initiative offers our SME members a further layer of support to help them navigate the complex offshore wind supply chain landscape. By working closely with the Xodus team we can help our members to develop a compelling business case, increase their competitiveness and deliver a sustainable business model. Cluster Builder will be an important tool to help build a strong and successful offshore wind supply chain in Scotland”

Scott Hamilton, Renewables Division Manager at Xodus said: “We are committed to this development and have established a suite of services to help companies active in relevant other industries to identify the opportunity in offshore wind and other renewable energy sectors and assist in building a strategic and coherent approach to this. The sector deal commitment of 60% local content by 2030 is an ambitious one, and it is important to prioritise those supply chain areas already available in the UK, while simultaneously targeting an expansion into areas identified as gaps.”

Xodus has worked with Scottish Enterprise on several projects to support and grow supply chain capability in Scotland. This work includes supply chain analysis for sensing and remote monitoring in marine renewable energy, Offshore Wind Expert Support for SMEs and the collation of Scottish supply chain databases in the offshore wind and green hydrogen sectors.

The ‘Cluster Builder’ project also strengthens Xodus’ offering to the global offshore wind supply chain across the Atlantic, where the company is conducting a similar research project. The Boston team is assessing the local and regional supply chain around Massachusetts and has also recently won work to carry out a related assessment and gap analysis for Hampton Roads and the southern Virginia region.

Jeff Tingley, Xodus’ US Head of Strategy and Market Development, added: “We’re in the rare position of providing genuine international partnership opportunities for local companies through our Scottish and US clusters and we’re seeing a steep rise in this type of work as more and more regions explore the opportunities available through offshore wind. Our renewables team provides a 360-degree view on how to develop successful energy projects and can draw upon the skills from the integrated discipline divisions across our international offices.”
