Alfa Laval has won an order to supply decanters to a wastewater treatment plant in San Diego, USA. The decanters will treat municipal wastewater, ensuring it is suitable for irrigation and other non-potable uses. The project is part of San Diego’s Recycle Water program which will provide more than 40 percent of the city’s water supply locally by the end of 2035.

The Recycled Water program offers a cost-effective investment for San Diego’s water needs and will provide a reliable, sustainable water supply. It gives the city a dependable, year-round and locally controlled water resource. Alfa Laval’s decanters will be installed in one of the municipal water treatment plants where they will be used for thickening and dewatering of the sludge.

alfa laval 2021“I’m very pleased to announce this decanter order in the important area of municipal wastewater treatment that confirms our customer’s trust in our world leading products,” says Nish Patel, President of the Food & Water Division. “Alfa Laval’s products within water treatment can also be used in industrial processes where they enable zero liquid discharge – well in line with the view of circular economy.”

Did you know… The city of San Diego also has a plan to install proven water purification technology to clean recycled water and enable production of safe, high-quality drinking water.

Alfa Laval is extending its global collaboration with Schneider Electric to digitize and analyze data to improve operational efficiency. The two companies will use near real-time energy consumption data across sites, countries and regions to identify and define energy efficiency projects. The collaboration is part of Alfa Laval’s efforts to become carbon neutral across the entire value chain by 2030.

2014 08 14 093039 alfa lavalThe collaboration with Schneider Electric began in 2019 and was designed to digitize the company’s energy infrastructure. Capturing energy consumption data across the business resulted in the identification of energy efficiency projects and initiatives to reduce energy usage and cost across sites, countries, and regions. In this next step, the two companies will develop Alfa Laval’s roadmap towards extended use of renewable energy, switching from natural gas to other more sustainable alternatives. Alfa Laval has set a target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 across the entire value chain, and this collaboration is an important step towards realizing this ambition.

“Accomplishing our carbon neutrality target will require efforts in our entire supply chain and enhanced collaboration with our customers, suppliers and the societies in which we operate,” says Mikael Tydén, Executive Vice President, Head of Operations at Alfa Laval. “We have joined the Exponential Roadmap Initiative to support the implementation of energy efficient solutions. Our extended partnership agreement with Schneider Electric is another concrete activity of reaching the 1.5°C scenario set in the Paris Agreement.”

Did you know… Energy efficiency is one of the main factors in reaching the Paris Agreement’s goals as it could deliver more than a 40 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions over the next 20 years according to International Energy Agency.

Alfa Laval has signed a partner agreement with Wayout International, a Swedish innovation company, to develop micro-factories for local and sustainable production of water and other beverages. The micro-factories will use Alfa Laval technology and be built at the company’s site in Copenhagen, Denmark. The agreement covers the production of up to 100 micro-factories, and the partnership starts in 2022.

Today more than 2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Wayout's micro-factories can treat all types of water and remineralize it to produce high quality drinking water. The fully automated plug-and-play system is powered by solar panels. Producing water locally addresses the challenges of bottling, logistics, and distribution, and reduces the generation of plastic waste.

2014 08 14 093039 alfa lavalThe partner agreement includes the production of two different micro-factory concepts: one for drinking water and another for brewed beverages.

“This partnership combines Alfa Laval’s technological expertise with Wayout’s innovative processes to accelerate sustainable solutions,” says Nish Patel, President of the Food & Water Division. “It addresses a globally important issue – access to safe drinking water – and we are very pleased our technology is part of the solution.”

Did you know … One micro-factory can produce 70,000 litres of drinking water each month, preventing up to 200,000 plastic bottles and 8 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the eco system.

Save 71% in water costs by upgrading one valve control top out of every four

Want to boost yield? Secure hygienic safety?
Reduce operating costs? Achieve your sustainability goals?

2021 09 01 100503Let experts at the Alfa Laval Fluid Handling Application & Innovation Centre solve the challenges you face. That’s what a leading global brewery did to determine the best way to reduce water costs when cleaning mixproof valves. No matter the industry or the challenge, our experts can come up with an innovative, fit-for-purpose solution for you.

Want to take your production to the next level? Contact us today.

Test results – more than 71% in water savings

Upgrading all valve control tops on a mixproof valve cluster isn’t always the optimal approach to raising process performance, especially for industries with less frequent cleaning requirements.
At least that’s what our Application & Innovation Centre experts found when investigating a sound upgrading strategy for the brewery. Our experts tested three scenarios using a set-up identical to the brewery’s own.

The optimal solution? Upgrading one out of every four valve control tops was by far the most attractive solution compared to upgrading them all.

“A total upgrade is not always the best approach. Sometimes a little ingenuity goes a long way,” says Mario Kurilic, Technical Sales Manager, Food & Water, Alfa Laval.
He continues: “Using one ThinkTop V70 to control four valve actuators delivered 71% in water savings and required less investment than changing all the control tops.”

Faster valve cleaning, faster payback time

ThinkTop V70 with burst seat cleaning functionality effectively cleans the valve seat much faster and uses less water than the brewery’s current cleaning system.
This makes it possible to realize payback in less than a year, depending on the cleaning requirements, frequency and cost structure.

Alfa Laval – a world leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling – in partnership with Stena Recycling, leading in recycling and circular solutions, is to launch a ground-breaking business model for sustainable and environmentally efficient recycling of heat exchangers, enabling up to 100 percent metal regeneration. The partnership is a first step towards a circular approach to the company’s product portfolio, and an important part of Alfa Laval’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.

2014 08 14 093039 alfa lavalThe goal of this new initiative is twofold: Firstly, to encourage replacement of less energy-efficient plate heat exchangers by new modern products. This will lead to significant energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions in customers’ processes. Secondly, plate heat exchangers contain large amounts of valuable metals that can be recycled and reused in new Alfa Laval products; Stena Recycling’s innovative technology enables up to 100 percent metal regeneration.

“This is an important step towards a more circular and sustainable approach when sourcing material, manufacturing and supplying our products,” says Susanne Pahlén Åklundh, President of the Energy Division. “Starting in the Nordic region, the recycling initiative will include three types of heat exchangers. However, we see great opportunities to expand the scope to other product groups and geographical areas in the future. This initiative is a win-win, to the benefit of our customers as well as to society.”

“The collaboration with Alfa Laval shows once again what effective circular solutions we can create when we work together. Simultaneously, as the industry receives help with significant energy efficiencies, we ensure a high recycling rate of older and inefficient plate heat exchangers in Sweden. These materials can be used as circular quality raw materials for new products, including new products that Alfa Laval manufactures ", says Fredrik Pettersson, Managing Director of Stena Recycling Sweden.

Did you know that… Alfa Laval has the ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 throughout the value chain – from material production and transportation to product manufacturing and delivery – and circularity of this kind is a key step?

The collaboration is inspired by the Circular Initiative, a business-driven event in circularity led by Stena Recycling.
