BASF Japan Ltd., a subsidiary of BASF SE (head office: Ludwigshafen, Germany), has announced that the high-pressure regenerative CO2 capture technology HiPACT® co-developed by BASF and its engineering partner JGC Corporation will be used by INPEX Corporation, one of Japan’s largest exploration and production companies in its Kashiwazaki Clean Hydrogen/Ammonia Project. This is Japan’s first demonstration project for the production of blue hydrogen/ammonia from domestically produced natural gas, the consistent implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in domestic depleted gas fields and the use of hydrogen for power generation and ammonia production. The project is funded by the Japanese governmental organization New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The HiPACT technology will be applied to efficiently capture and recover CO2 in the process gas from a hydrogen production facility using domestic natural gas as feedstock. Located in the Hirai area of Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, the production facility is constructed by JGC Japan Corporation and is expected to start up in 2025. The recovered CO2 will be injected into the reservoirs of the depleted gas fields leveraging CCUS technologies for enhanced gas recovery (EGR).

2014 08 15 071746 basf red logoBy releasing the CO2 off gas above atmospheric pressure, HiPACT is expected to reduce CO2 capture and compression costs by up to 35% compared with conventional technologies. This is due to its excellent high-temperature durability and CO2 absorption performance. As CO2 can be stored underground in an energy-saving manner, maximum benefits are expected for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

trinamiX thus opens up new ways for customers from the textile industry to exploit additional potential in the field of textile recycling. Textile collection companies and organizations are equipped with an efficient tool that enables them to pre-sort goods according to quality and next processor. Recycling companies can improve the quality of the recycling process by continuously checking incoming goods. Textile manufacturers also benefit from mobile textile recognition: they can use spot measurement at goods receipt to check if the delivered textiles are in conformity with the ordered quality.

The solution supports a wide range of common textile grades used in clothing, furniture and household goods, for example: acrylic, cotton, nylon 6/6.6, polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT), polyester, polypropylene (PP), silk, sisal, viscose and wool. Textiles made from more than one material can also be identified. These include blends based on acrylic, cotton, nylon, polyester, silk or wool.   

For the special requirements of recycling carpets, trinamiX has developed a dedicated application.  It supports all common textile and plastic types used in carpets such as nylon 6 and nylon 6.6, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) and wool. The carpet application is the first one within trinamiX’s Mobile NIR Spectroscopy Solution to work offline. This means that the identification of carpet materials can be carried out when there is no connection to the internet. The data is evaluated and stored directly on the device and smartphone. A later upload to the customer portal is possible without any problems.

trinamiX will present the new applications on November 9 and 10 at two trade shows: Greener Manufacturing Show in Cologne, Germany (booth 5017 in hall 10.1) and Plastics Recycling World Expo in Cleveland, USA (booth 635).

trinamiX GmbH, a leading provider of mobile spectroscopy, with support from the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, a global non-profit organization, launched an initiative to supply waste management projects with 50 starter kits to identify different plastic types on the spot. Each kit contains trinamiX’s Mobile NIR Spectroscopy Solution, a smartphone, data analysis in the trinamiX spectroscopy cloud, real-time access to results via mobile app and the documentation of results in the customer portal. The usage is free for one year.

The ambition is to work with companies, non-profit organizations and academia to explore where plastic waste occurs, how it is handled and where it ends up. The goal is to learn more about the impact the technology creates and exchange best practices from around the world.

The proprietary technology helps to improve the sorting of waste by identifying a broad range of plastic types. This is especially relevant in areas where waste management infrastructure is limited, or industrial sorting solutions are not viable. Thanks to its flexibility, trinamiX’s handheld solution has been used by companies and initiatives across the globe, including Alaska, Mali and Cambodia.

In an event at K-Fair, the world’s leading tradeshow for Plastics and Rubber in Düsseldorf, on Oct 25, 2022, trinamiX and the Alliance explained how they collaborate to bring the technology to remote areas. Winners of the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition for Car Painting raised the bar in skill and sustainable practices. The event was held October 18-22 at College 360, the largest general and vocational educational institution in Silkeborg, Denmark.

  • After four intensive days of competition, winners emerged from a diverse field of the world’s best car painters

Thirteen of the world’s best painters competed during four intensive days, with each completing specific tasks.

WorldSkills Competitions have evolved

The WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition was the official replacement for the 46th edition WorldSkills competition that was canceled in May due to the pandemic. It would have been held in Shanghai, China.

In its place, 62 skill competitions are happening over 12 weeks in 15 countries and regions between October and the end of November. In the spirit of the WorldSkills brand, the Special Edition promotes vocational skills for young talents globally.

In March 2022, BASF signed a multi-year global industry partnership as the exclusive sponsor of the Car Painting category of WorldSkills International. That includes sponsorship rights to the next WorldSkills event to be held in Lyon, France, in 2024.

The Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, opened its first regional innovation and technology center for applied surface treatment technology in Shanghai, China. The new 2,600 square meter center will focus on developing advanced surface treatment solutions and product innovations for a wide range of industries and market segments in Asia, for Asia.

BASF closed the divestiture of its kaolin minerals business to KaMin, a global performance minerals company headquartered in Macon, Georgia, United States, following the fulfillment of clearance conditions.

The divestiture comprises the production hub with sites in Daveyville, Toddville, Edgar, Gordon and related mines, reserves and mills in Toomsboro and Sandersville in Georgia, United States. The co-located refinery catalysts operations will continue to be owned and operated by BASF’s refinery catalysts business and are not part of the divestiture.

Energiekontor AG, a pioneer in renewable energies since 1990 and listed on the SDAX of the German stock exchange, has teamed up with the international maintenance company Omega-Tools GmbH and BASF’s Coatings division to gradually equip its wind turbines with Novaflex BladeUp, thus making them more efficient. With its microscopic line structures, the functional film ensures a noticeable increase in the yield of wind turbines. The riblets reduce the formation of unfavorable air turbulence on the surface of the blades, so that a larger proportion of the wind can be used for generating electricity. In a measurement campaign that has been running for about a year, an increase of up to three percent in power output was determined; for this purpose, BASF Novaflex BladeUp was installed on a 1.3-megawatt SWT 1,300 turbine (formerly AN Bonus) in Ilsede, Lower Saxony, Germany.

“We are impressed with the significant increase in power yield with Novaflex BladeUp. This makes it all the more important that we implement this option for our plants in a timely manner and thus contribute to the energy transition,” said Carsten Schwarz, Member of the Management Board from Energiekontor AG. The company has awarded Omega-Tools GmbH a first contract to equip wind turbines of the tested type with BASF’s film and intends to include further turbine types. In the long term, Energiekontor AG wants to equip all available turbines – their own and those managed by their company – with Novaflex BladeUp.

BASF has worked closely with the Wind division of Omega-Tools GmbH to ensure that the films are professionally installed. “The subsequent application of the functional film to existing wind turbines is feasible without long idle times of the plant and can be performed for every model,” said Olaf Dostalek, Managing Director of Omega-Tools GmbH, who with his company takes over the Europe-wide application of Novaflex BladeUp to the turbines of Energiekontor AG, and who acts as contact and sales partner for this technology in the market.

BASF is also interested in extending Novaflex BladeUp to turbines and blades from other manufacturers and other performance classes. “An integration into the manufacturing processes of the blade manufacturers would also be possible, so that new wind turbines can directly generate a higher electricity yield,” said Jörg Lenz, head of the Beyond Paint Solutions business unit at BASF.

BASF will showcase VALERAS™ for its plastic additives portfolio for the first time at K 2022. New sustainable solutions for a competitive edge

BASF will be showcasing various new trend-setting sustainable additives solutions at K 2022:

Rotomolded products are commonly used for outdoor applications such as water storage tanks. Extreme weather is very damaging to the properties of these applications. Designed specifically for polyethylene rotational moulding resins, the tailored additive package from the Irgastab® range extends the service life of rotomolded parts and also saves time, energy and costs during processing.

The Irgatec® CR technology enables the creation of advanced melt-blown nonwoven materials that fulfil the increasing requirements defined for personal hygiene and filter applications. With Irgatec® CR 25, BASF introduces a solution targeting PP melt blown modification, which is of high interest for filtration materials. The solution can be implemented directly by the meltblown producers without additional investment in their existing line, thus enabling a faster-to-market solution for speciality PP nonwoven products.

Additives are key enablers for circular plastics and drive innovation for recyclability. The recently launched IrgaCycle range includes additives solutions that are specifically designed to improve the properties of mechanically recycled plastics for different target industries. Recyclers can benefit from a higher quality of recyclates whereas converters can increase recycled content in their applications. IrgaCycle tackles challenges like gel formation mitigate the impact of impurities and improves mechanical performance by enhancing process stability.

Sustainability journey continues

As an extension to the VALERAS portfolio, BASF is now offering its plastic additives customers product carbon footprints for several antioxidants and light stabilizers as a premium service via the myPlasticAdditives online portal. Customers using this service will be provided with greenhouse gas emission information starting with raw material extraction right up to the point a product leaves the BASF factory gates. With the additional transparency, BASF helps its customers to prioritize carbon savings actions, validate sustainability claims for creating low-carbon plastics, and increasingly make sustainable purchasing decisions.

In a series of high-level “Creator Talks” at its booth featured under MAKE – USE – RECYCLE, BASF will showcase projects with technology leaders where strong collaboration and open exchange have enabled customers to overcome technical challenges. The Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm, which is currently under construction, has successfully generated its first electricity.

While still in their testing phase, the first operating turbines are already producing electricity, which is transferred to shore via an offshore transformation station and fed into the Dutch grid.

The wind farm is located in the North Sea about 18-35 kilometers off the coast between The Hague and Zandvoort and is owned by BASF, Vattenfall and Allianz.

So far, 36 turbines have been installed. When fully operational in 2023, Hollandse Kust Zuid will be the largest subsidy-free offshore wind farm in the world with 140 turbines and an installed capacity of 1.5 GW.

With the certification of BASF’s production site in Cassina Rizzardi, Italy, BASF is the first chemical company offering certified sustainable personal care ingredients based on coconut oil. The company was certified according to the Rainforest Alliance Mass Balance Coconut certification scheme. Mass balance (MB) is a supply chain model that fosters the physical flow of certified raw materials within the supply chains, while the farmers benefit from selling Rainforest Alliance Certified coconuts and copra.  

“With the certification of our first production site and the offer of Rainforest Alliance Certified personal care ingredients to our customers, amongst palm and castor oil, we have established another supply chain based on renewables. We have thus taken an important step in transforming the market towards certified, sustainably sourced oleochemicals”, said Jutta Stute Sustainability Manager in BASF’s Care Chemicals division.

Coconut oil is an important feedstock for the chemical industry. BASF uses coconut oil to produce ingredients for cosmetic products, detergents and cleaning agents as well as foodstuff.

The certification of coconut oil was made possible by a development partnership between BASF, Cargill, The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) and the German government agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with the strong support from the Rainforest Alliance and the Philippine Coconut Authority. The objective of the project was to increase the income and economic self-sufficiency of smallholder coconut farmers in the Philippines and Indonesia by promoting a sustainable certified coconut oil supply chain. Between November 2015 and October 2018 more than 4,100 coconut farmers were trained in good agricultural practice (GAP), good processing practice as well as farm management. About 1,600 farmers received additional training and have been certified according to the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard. Farmers who were trained and certified have, on average, a 47 percent higher income than farmers who did not participate in the program.
